Backside Douglas
(Cairn with Pink Rock)
BD b&w
Dear Subscriber -
Backside Douglas - that's what "everyone" in Juneau calls the
north-west section/beach of Douglas Island; if you live there, you may
know this ... the "of" is left out when you say it out loud.
Hiking to the backside of Douglas Island, especially on a nice day, is
a mini-grand adventure. Out on the beaches you have some nice views of
Stevens Passage and the north end of Admiralty Island, or Kootznoowoo -
Fortress of the Bears.
My husband and I trekked out there last summer and stomped around; I
made rock cairns, Matt found some birds, and we watched whales and
whale-watching boats ... so many! I snapped a photo of a nice scene and
as many of you know, I love painting en plein air, but I found when I
got home that I wanted to make a painting of that scene with some ideas
about it.
The following show my progressions for that painting.

That last picture needs some explaining. I put the photo of the
painting in the Procreate app on my iPad and began painting a cairn in
the foreground to see what that would look like. I like it, but it is
more funny than anything ... so I didn't paint it in.
