Dear Subscriber - I hope your sanity is holding strong. In my February newsletter, as a respite, I would like to introduce you to a German expressionist fairly new on my radar. Gabriele Münter (artnet article).

What I was surprised to find out was that she and Wassily Kandinsky were a thing. (That Kandinsky link will take you down deep into a rabbit hole if you let it ... maybe save it for when you have some time ...). In the summer of 1902, Kandinsky invited Gabriele Münter (Wikipedia) to join him at his summer painting classes just south of Munich in the Alps. She accepted the offer and their relationship became more personal than professional.

Of Kandinsky's behavior with women, I can only comment he seemed fairly misogynistic and pretty full of himself. One quote to Münter when she was his student, though, was insightful. Kandinsky told her "You cannot be taught anything. You have everything from birth. The only thing I can do for you is to preserve and nurture your gift so that nothing wrong will stick to it."

I have a little painting I made that is very "Münter-like" in my opinion, and that delights me. What do you think?

Another fact the artnet article revealed was that Gabriele was also a photographer. Her photographs capture some of the shared interests that would be seen repeated in her paintings: informal portraits, evocative landscapes, and intimate still lifes. I just love this photo Gabriele took while in Texas traveling with her sister.

So that is another wonderful artist of the past to perhaps add to your list! Gabriele Münter is finally getting her well-deserved recognition around the world. You can find her exhibition in Madrid, Spain (just ending), and one is coming up at the Guggenheim, New York, in November of this year.

Take time to see and purchase art. Looking at a painting helps ease your mind when you focus attention on the colors, the shapes, the subjects, the brushstrokes ... and think about how and why the artist painted, engraved, photographed, or sculpted what they did. Here at home we are filling up our walls with art we love!
